In regard to the internationalisation of companies within de
demarcation area of the Chamber, traditionally these companies have
been characterised by their important exporting activity. According to
the latest available data, the export volume of the companies within
the demarcation area is approximately 3,171,774 (thousands EUR),
corresponding to the year 2002. This number translates to
approximately 1.5 % of the Spanish exports and to approximately 5 % of
the total exports from Catalonia. The most important exported products are machinery and appliances
(70 %), textile (7 %), and chemical products (6.5 %), albeit other
articles and sectors are constantly gaining in importance as well. The European Union Member States are the main destination (around
81 %) for the majority of the exports from the companies within the
demarcation area. For this reason, it is necessary to evaluate the
difficulty involved in exporting to these countries, which, although
being geographically nearby, are at the same time countries with very
competitive companies and products. The companies within the demarcation have an exporting intensity
(defined as the export volume divided by the total turnover) of
38.12 %, compared to 31.8 % for Spain as a whole. The companies showing the greatest exporting activity are those with
26 to 100 employees, although 35.2 % of the companies with less than
26 employees are also capable of meeting the requirements of foreign
customers. On the other hand, an analysis of the international
marketing activities shows that only 17.5 % of the companies provide
some type of product differentiation between the products aimed at the
domestic market and those intended for export, and that, at the same
time, the sales prices have not been adapted to the particular market.
